Shelves that hold what a house actually accumulates
Calaris Library is a sole proprietorship based in Jaipur, Rajasthan, operating online only at calarislibrary.shop. It began with a bookcase that bowed. Not dramatically — just enough, over one summer, for the middle shelf to dip under two rows of paperbacks and for the doors below to stop closing square.
The unit had been bought on a photograph and a price. Nowhere in that listing was the one number that mattered: how much weight a shelf would actually take over its span. That gap is what this shop was set up to close.
So every listing here carries the external dimensions, the internal shelf clearance and the tested load per shelf, measured on our own floor rather than copied from a supplier sheet. We load a sample shelf to its rating, leave it a fortnight, and measure the deflection again before the model goes on the site.
The range is deliberately narrow — open shelving, closed cabinets, sideboards and a few wardrobes — because storage is bought to fit a specific wall, and it is more useful to know four carcass depths properly than to list forty. Most of our buyers are people furnishing a first flat, families reorganising after a move, and a steady trickle of readers whose books have outgrown the last thing they bought.
We are online only, with no showroom and no dealer network. That keeps the price honest and puts the whole weight on the listing being accurate — which is a discipline we would rather be held to than escape.
To make storage furniture something you can specify from a screen: real dimensions, a tested load per shelf, packing built for the freight network, and a delivery you inspect before you sign for.
What goes on a listing before it goes on sale
CompartmentsLoad tested, not estimated
A sample shelf is loaded to its rating and left a fortnight before the model is listed. The number you read is the one we measured, including the deflection we were willing to accept.
Three dimensions, not one
External size, internal shelf clearance and carcass depth are all published, because a unit that fits the alcove but not the box files has still failed.
Crated corner-first
Panels travel face-to-face with foam between them and a hard protector on every corner. Corners are what freight damages, and a chipped edge shows for the life of the unit.
Payment without a card
Pay by UPI or settle in cash at the door. No card details are entered anywhere on this site, and we take no deposits or part payments.
Our promise to you
If a crate arrives with a chipped edge, a bowed panel or a missing fittings bag, record the unboxing, tell us within 48 hours, and we replace it or refund it and pay the freight both ways. A bookcase should outlast several rearrangements of a room — how we handle one bad crate ought to outlast it too.
